MUGSY'S
NIGHTMARE RULES
Right, here's a chance for all you confused cats out there who are still
puzzling over the rules to Mugsy's Nightmare, a game played in the Patrick
Marber play 'Dealer's Choice'. I can tell you the rules, but please no e-mails
regarding what cards to play, what is a good hand, and how to win, cos I
haven't the slightest clue!
All players anti in for a set amount, e.g. £25
A card is dealt face down to all players, starting left of a designated
dealer, then another face down followed by a single card face up to
everyone.
The betting is started by a 'forced bring in' by the highest face up card,
(in the event of a tie, the nearest to the button clockwise) of either the
anti amount (£25) or they can opt to raise it to £50.
The action rotates clockwise from this player, the options being, Fold, Call
or raise a further £25. Once the anti amount has been raised 4 times then no
further raises can be made.
The remaining players are now dealt another card face up and the highest
hand now has the action. A pair at this stage brings in over, say, AK. There
is no forced bet at this stage and the high hand can check or bet.
After the round of betting a final card is dealt face up to the remaining
players and a final round of betting takes place.
Any remaining players are now to show their cards and the best 5 card poker
hand wins the pot. It is high/low however. i.e. if someone has 5 cards of 8
or lower (Aces count low in this case) has a low hand and qualifies to
contest half the pot.
So that's how the betting works, but it's the 'wildcards' that make Mugsy's
Nightmare such a farce.
Here's the wildcards : any 4, and Queen and "One Eyed Jacks' (i.e. the 2
jacks in the pack that have their faces in profile, only showing one eye).
So these wildcards can be used as any card you like, and can be used as a
different card for the high and the low.
Confused yet? Here's an example of a hand :
Player 1 : A54QQ ( Plays his Q Q and 4 as Aces to make 4 of a kind for the
high, and the Q Q as a 2 and a 3 for the low, A2345)
Obviously with the introduction of these wildcards there is opportunity for
a 5 of a kind. This outranks a straight flush on the poker ladder.
The one remaining twist to the game is that if the suicide King (King of
hearts) is dealt face up to a player at any stage then the player must
immediately fold his/her hand and surrender the pot. Unlucky boyz.
Hope this clears a few things up. All learn it for the crazed dealers choice
cash game or tourneys that will inevitably be being played from now on at
the SBT collective home game. Otherwise you could just fold .....
