The
2004 WSOC (in the words of one of the players) was “the longest 16 player tourney
in history”. That comment wasn’t an overstatement!.
What a day
The BBQ was fired up at 1.15pm and cooking commenced at 1.45pm. Thanks to Hambo and
Arbernaut for their chef duties on the day, which left me free to prepare all the
other food that went with all that meat. Wouldn’t have been able to do it without
you
The phone never stopped ringing. Jeff and Priscilla were stuck in traffic,
AGAIN! Jamie and Dicky had somehow completely missed J13 off the M1 and ended up at
J15!! A few people that hadn’t been here before (and some that had) kept ringing for
directions. Eventually everyone arrived and we got stuck into the BBQ.
By 3.05pm we had all drawn for our seats and were ready to play. At 4.25 the first
person was out. I found AA (just for a change) and Neil went all in on a low flop
with QQ. I called and the turn and river gave him no help
A hand that Mark (Prince Charles) was telling me about against Jeff (Nuts Nathan)
went something like this….
Nuts Nathan flopped quad 10s and Prince Charles continued to represent that HE had
the 10 . Luckily Prince Charles
had “plenty of chips” and it didn’t damage his stack too badly.
The next person didn’t go out for an hour or so after that. Then no one seemed to
go out for hours . By 10.30pm
we finally got to 9 players. “Final!”. 7 ½ hours and still not half the field gone .
We were having a 5-10 min break every 2 hours (2 levels) just to get up and stretch
our legs and, of course, talk about most recent bad beats.
Talk of changing the clock from 1 hour to 45 mins was discussed at the final table,
and dismissed, as there were a few low stacks and those with the low stacks thought
it unfair. So we carried on with the 1 hour levels.
I was first to depart the final table in 9th position when Nuts Nathan raised into
me with JT of spades. I re-raised all in. He thought forever and eventually called.
Cards on their backs. I turn over pocket 8s. Flop came AKQ I
needed a miracle to get out of this one I thought. My miracle never came and I got
up and did the washing up (as usual ).
WSOC 2004 also saw our first ever Royal Flush since the game has been running .
Prince Charles had the AK of clubs and knocked out James (Arbernaut) in 6th position
with his Royal.
By 3am it was 3 handed with Chris (The_Ace), Prince Charles and Jamie (Jokers Full)
left battling for the and first
prize cash.
The_Ace went on a mission and damaged the HUGE stack in front of Jokers Full in a
couple of hands and then Jokers Full was eventually taken out in 3rd by Prince Charles
when they both hit a straight. Prince Charles had a straight (5-9) and Jokers full
had a stright (4-8)
Heads up didn’t take too long between The_Ace and Prince Charles. Here is the final
hand……
Prince Charles called from the small blind with J7
flop was 2 spades with a Jack and a deuce
The_Ace made it 10k.....Prince Charles called
turn came a deuce
The_Ace made it 15k......Prince Charles re-raised all in
The_Ace called for another 25k or so. Cards on their backs.
The_Ace turns over 34 of spades, showing a flush draw.
The_Ace needed a Spade to win (except the J of spades)
last card was 9 spades....
So, finally, after over 13 hours of poker and very few breaks, The_Ace was the winner.
It was a fantastic game. Almost everyone came up to me at some point during the day
and said what a great game it was. “The best one ever” was a comment by more than
one person.
By 5.10am I was tucked up in bed dreaming about the next home game. Thanks again to
everyone who attended and made it yet another great day of poker.
