My trip in December had me staying at The Wynn.  I managed to get the most fantastic deal that I couldn't pass up which is why I chose this particular hotel.  This new hotel is all very nice and flash and sparkly, but the cons outweighed the pros IMO.

First of all, the location sucks.  You pretty much need a taxi to get anywhere.  Give it 5-8 years and the location will be fabulous as old hotels such as The Frontier, Stardust and Westward Ho are demolished to make way for new hotels.   For now though, you need to take this into consideration before choosing this hotel.

As it happens, we ended up walking almost everywhere, but if you are one of these people who hates to walk, then The Wynn is not for you unless you want to spend a fortune on taxis.

Secondly, they offer a "turn down service".  For those of you who do not know what this is, you basically agree for the maids to come back at night and turn down the covers on  your bed.  Along with this, they leave you a nice little mint on  your pillow and put the radio on.  What's the point!?!  no one seems to know!

I made a call EVERY night to housekeeping.  "NO TURN DOWN SERVICE!".  Every night we would arrive back to the room, radio blaring (you just dont need this after doing your absolutes) to find the room had be turned down.

In the end you just have to keep the "Privacy" sign on the door and they get the message - well, most nights they get the message.  They still come and do a turn down when they want to - like it or not.

The Cardroom at The Wynn looks spectacular at first glance.  Almost as nice as the Bellagio.  Trying to get a seat is another matter.  There is no co-ordination (even with their computerised waiting list) and trying to get a waitress is even more impossible.  It took 40 minutes to get into a $1/$3 NLHE game that had over 8 people on the wait list.  A suggestion to just open another table was laughed off.  So wait I did.

After visiting numerous other cardrooms I found out that most people stay away from The Wynn cardroom for these very reasons.

The waitresses are stunning at The Wynn but come midnight, they must all turn into pumpkins and run off home, because there was never one in sight once the clock struck twelve.  Numerous requests to members of staff were made on many occassions, the waitresses never came.  You need a drink while losing your money I reckon.

It's not all doom and gloom for The Wynn though.  We arrived to be greated by extremely friendly staff (who gave us a free "upgrade" which basically meant a top floor (60th) room with a view of the strip).  No complaints here, the view is amazing from 60 floors up.

The rooms are magnificent.  Everything you could possibly need.  Comfy 7ft bed, dressing gown and slippers supplied for your convenience.  Mini bar with drinks and other tasty snacks.  High speed internet access.  The deepest bath tub I had ever seen and you even get a phone in the loo!

So all in all, the trip was fantastic, but the location ruined it slightly.  If you like to spend your time in the heart of everything ie the Bellagio/Caesars/Flamingo and all that area, then The Wynn is not a good idea.

The trip in June on the other hand, was at The Aladdin.  Not such a posh hotel and with basic rooms (which still had everything you needed in a room) but you are in the heart of everything.  You step out of the casino and it's all happening, so to speak, on your doorstep.

It's a 10 minute walk to the MGM if you go straight there and a 20 minute walk to the Mirage.

Given the choice and when I return to Vegas, I will deffinitely be staying in the heart of things.  Having scoped out all the casinos now, Flamingos, Paris, Ballys and Aladdin all seem the most ideal and central location.

The other end of the strip has the Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur and Tropicana hotels.  IMO these are just too far away as well.  There is a plus side to staying in these though - there is a free monorail service that runs from the Mandalay Bay to the Excalibur (stopping at the Luxor).  Finding the monorail is pretty easy and saves your feet!

All in all - wherever you stay in Vegas is a matter of personal preference.   The central location does make life a lot easier though.
